The best rule of thumb for ham is to plan about 1/2 pound per person when picking a bone-in ham (it's heavier) and 1/3 pound if boneless. Look, at the end of the day, some people will eat more than expected, some will eat less—it'll even out.
Chopped ham is a mixture of ham chunks and trimmings and seasonings, ground together and then packaged into loaves. By chipping or shaving the meat loaf against a commercial meat slicer blade, the resultant thinly sliced product has a different texture and flavor compared to thickly sliced ham.
In a large bowl, combine water, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar and mustard; pour over ham and stir well. Cover and cook on low until heated through, 4-5 hours. Serve on buns.
Barbecued chipped ham sandwiches are a quick solution to dinner. The BBQ sauce is simple and made from scratch on the stovetop. The ham mixture can also be frozen.
A portion bone-in ham (7.5lbs average weight) serves 10 people. Great for dinner parties, or a family dinner with plenty left over for sandwiches and such. A quarter ham (1.6lbs average weight) serves 6 or 7 people.
It features ham from a processed, pressed, shape loaf called “Chopped Ham.” That ham is “chipped,” or shaved translucently thin, to the point where it begins to shred. The product is sold as “chipped chopped ham” or sometimes referred to by locals as “chip chop” ham.
There are two parts to chipped chopped ham: the first is the type of ham (chopped) and the second is how it's sliced (chipped). It starts with a loaf (yes, loaf) of chopped ham, which is made of ham, ham trimmings, and seasonings ground up and formed into a mold.
The sandwich may have been invented in Pittsburgh, but according to Allrecipes, chipped chopped ham is popular in parts of West Virginia and Ohio, too. Basically, chipped ham is chopped ham that's been cut into very thin slices.
With a spiral-cut ham, keep the slices packed together as much as possible and protect the ham from direct heat. To keep the end from drying out, place the ham cut-side down on a sheet of aluminum foil. This will help hold in the moisture while exposing the skin to the heat and flavor of the grill.
Just because you roast your ham on the grill instead of in the oven, there is no need to alter any cooking times. A good rule of thumb is 12-15 minutes per pound when you stay between 225-250 degrees for a precooked ham. Track the temperature with your iGrill.
It's generally fine to consume prepackaged lunch meat seven to 10 days after the sell-by date. Once open, however, it should be eaten within five days. Freshly sliced deli meat should also be eaten within five days.
Once you open a package of ham, or if it comes open — like if it was sliced at the deli counter— you can safely eat your leftovers for up to five days. In addition to these dates, it's always best to stick to the use-by date printed on the ham's package.
Estimate 3/4 to 1 pound per person for a bone-in ham. No matter what size ham you purchase, save the bone to make the best bean soup or save some ham for sandwiches, casseroles, and other leftover dishes.
Again, you may want to buy a slightly larger whole spiral ham to ensure every one of your guests can go home with plenty of leftovers for sandwiches the next day.
