have a lead for '95.FM suspension package AND Momo steering wheel (is this a mod or is this factory?) 161000 kms, some rust, needs brakes, timing belt, starter button? What do you think?

You can check out wholesale on the Toyota Canada website.

http://www.toyota.ca/NWS/english/confighelp/appraise_tradein_vehicle.html

That doesn't tell you retail pricing. You can get that from the autotrader. Have you checked out the Trillium Miata Club classified section? TMC is in Toronto, as is the Miataphiles group. (I'm not a member there, and can't tell you whether anyone has a car for sale.)
Not too far away...there's the Underground Miata Network in Ottawa. Perhaps members there are considering selling.

There are many passionate Miata owners that look at this site. Perhaps they'll step up and provide their help.

Just sold my clean original no winters 97 base model with 180,000 for $6k, needed basically nothing,I would say the one you are looking at should be in the $4k or less range, and then expect to put a few $k into updating neglected maintenance such as all fluids and filters, ignition wires and plugs, timing belt, water pump, cam seals, brakes, shocks, starter button may need to be returned to original ignition, hows the tires?Cooling system?Clutch?and how extensive is the rust? And at 15yrs old the top is probably in need of replacement.Could be a money pit on its last legs.
I'd keep looking and expect to pay around $8 to $10k for a lower mileage no winters car that needs no repairs.

thanks for the insight on the other maintenance items. I received info about this vehicle via e-mail and haven't seen car yet. Just wondering what a fair offer would be or is it a waste of time?

Auto Trader has 5 `95's from around $6K to $11 K

Some rust...where? If it's in the rocker panels (at the seam, just in front of the rear wheels), the only PROPER fix is new rocker panels and new rear quarter panels. Sadly, this is about $7,500 at autobody shops here (Alberta has higher labour rates, so that shops can retain staff)...might be cheaper in Ontario.

Timing belt...that isn't needed until 192,000km, as that's the second 96,000km interval. Major services are every 48,000km, with the belt adding to the other items (all fluids, plugs, air filter, fuel filter) every second time around.

Brakes...be sure that the rear calipers aren't seized on the slider pin (preventing them from floating, and thusly braking with both pads). The cost of a new caliper and caliper bracket can be surprising.

The Momo steering wheel is not oem...and thusly the car no longer has its driver's side airbag, which may or may not be an issue for you.

Try searching the classified here,or Auto trader, Craigs list, or Kijiji (http://london.kijiji.ca/f-miata-cars-vehicles-cars-over-5K-W0QQisSearchFormZtrueQQCatIdZ28QQKeywordZmiata) this last one is dialed in for London Ont.

Dave L

Richard, I wondered whether the timing belt had been changed once during the life of the car. If it hasn't then I would wonder whether the Miata was properly serviced.

Regards,

If I had a choice between an early air bag, or no air bag at all, I'd go with the no air bag.
Vancouver Craig's List has some nice NAs. I especially like this one: http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/car/682484798.html

just received more info about 95. Base model,BRG,161000 kms, rust on rocker panel, needs brakes and exhaust.Apparently the engine and drivetrain is fine. Going to have a look see on the weekend.Asking $3500 but going to take quite alot to get on road. What you think.

Richard Dekker

27th May 2008, 21:27

So, you gotta ask...at $3,500, is it a $11,000 Miata if you fix the rust? Likely not. Find one without rust.

Brewster

28th May 2008, 09:24

Find one without rust.

In Ontario, land of the midnite salter?
Our `90 has seen maybe six weeks of winter in it's life time and that was so long ago.
Had the rockers welded up, IIRC, 2yrs ago.

Compared to what's on AT, $3500 asking price is not bad. Certified, e-tested?
Can the op do the tb, brakes himself?

Glad you're on the hunt. Trust it works out for you.

Suspect you should check out the condition of the soft top and rear window. IIRC there's suggestions of what to look for in the reference section at www.miata.net just in caseyou haven't been there before.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

BTW, had 2 favourits. Our '92 black&tan with a hardtop, and our 2001 blue/white

Don't worry about the rear window. Most of the time, it can be polished until clear again.

What type of polish?

Hey Dave, looks like we're competitors. :D I'm looking for pretty much the same thing as you. Don't bother with the 91 BRG at Neo Auto. Low miles, but some serious problems.

ChaoZ

3rd July 2008, 23:16

Dave, did you have better luck with the other 91 BRG?
I'm really looking at 1.8 engines now, of a slightly younger vintage.

davegee

4th July 2008, 20:27

Yes. Every thing it was advertised as. Bought it for $5100.Picking it up Mon. no plates Just wondering best way to tow from front or rear on a dolly.(approx 100 miles)

mxqisit

4th July 2008, 20:45

Front-up, disconnected driveshaft, that's the preferred method.

davegee

4th July 2008, 22:38

Ok disconnect shaft at diff. Tie shaft up.Is this a big job? able to do with sockets(metric?)Have to do in sellers driveway.

jambo101

5th July 2008, 06:04

Have you priced the cost to flatbed the car to its destination? for just 100 miles it might be cheaper than you think, definitely a lot less hassle.I had a buddy flatbed his Miata from California to Montreal and it cost $1000.I would think 100 miles from TO should be less than $200.

5th July 2008, 07:16

For 100 miles !... You'd go to thru the hassel of detaching a drive shaft and risk it dropping off, leaking oil. Removing it from the differential is going to be fun, in a drive way.

davegee

going to price rental dollys and car haulers today. Problem with car hauler is my hitch. Class 3 good for 3500 lbs. Might be ok depending on weight of trailer. car apprx 2200 lbs.

I'm sorry if that's too much work for you to do.

For someone who just bought the car and wants to get it home safely, the 30 minutes is well worth the effort.

For someone who just bought the car and wants to get it home safely, the 30 minutes is well worth the effort.

Let's be realistic here... It's not the work, It's the distance. If it was 10000 miles, maybe !... but what is 100 milles going to cause on a trans. The differential gears and bearings are still spinning away. Might as well pull the gears out of the diff while your at it. If he is unsure of the state of the machine, why buy it?.

Secondly. I would not let a perfect stranger take the drive shaft off a Miata I just sold him, in my drive way. I can just see the shaft drop off accidentaly and oil spilling out the tail end. Or worse he strips or brakes a bolt... OPPS Sorry!..

There is also the little issue of responsibility. He injures himself in your drive way...

jambo101

I must have missed the reason you arent just driving the car home

No plates. Guess things are different in Ontario. I may be wrong seems to me you can even tow it if no plates, only flat bed or trailer queen.

davegee

5th July 2008, 21:07

I would not want someone dropping oil on my nice new interlock paved drive.Car is 18 years old -might be a little work removing rusted bolts. not driving home as car is not plated-present owner did not renew sticker as he is buying a 2008 miata.

03534

5th July 2008, 21:52

Not plated. Just s thought, did you look into getting this re-plated.. Any issues on getting an 18 year old car plated again in Ontario ?. Additional costs

davegee

5th July 2008, 22:49

car would have to pass saftey check. would rather have my own mechanic do this not a unknown one 100 miles from home. my only hope is to get transfer of ownership done before current sticker expires on July 7 then hoping to get 10 day temp permit allowing me to drive car home.

KenNaz

11th July 2008, 16:35

Why not get 10-day temporary plates from the ministry? Just $15 as long as you have insurance. Just my $0.02.

davegee

13th July 2008, 21:38

10 day temp is what i did. my concern was previous owner was going to take car off the road (buying new miata retirement present).'91 currently in my garage awaiting me to finish required brake job for safety cert.Hope to complete this week and then we will be cruisin. Thanks to everyone for there info.
