CVR’s Wynnewood Refinery Begins Renewable Diesel Production

CVR Energy Inc. announced on May 2 that it had successfully completed the conversion and start-up of the renewable diesel unit at its Wynnewood refinery in Oklahoma. The company also said it was continuing to advance its renewable energy restructuring plan.

During a first quarter earnings call on May 3, CVR President and CEO David Lamp said the planned turnaround at Wynnewood began in late February and was completed on schedule as of during the first week of April. The company has also completed the conversion of the hydrocracker to renewable diesel service, he added. According to Lamp, the renewable diesel unit has started operations and is currently operating at around 50% capacity as the company works to certify the renewable diesel product.

In addition, Lamp said CVR continues to make progress with the raw material pre-treatment unit to be installed at the Wynnewood site. Long-term equipment has been ordered, he said, with the project currently in the licensing phase. Due to ongoing supply chain issues, CVR aims to complete the pre-processing unit by the shipping quarter next year.

Lamp also discussed CVR’s plans to spin off its renewable fuels business into a separate entity, as announced in February. This reorganization plan has been approved by the company’s board of directors and new entities have been created for the various assets, Lamp said.
